The annual Alumni night was a great event! The girl’s game saw a dozen former players come with 10 of them entering the field of play. The varsity had 13 present of which only four had any high school soccer experience. The alum won the match but the varsity squad showed a lot of talent and potential.
In the boys match, there were about 18 alum present, while the varsity had 11 able bodies. The game went to the final minutes with Ryan Musser scoring the deciding goal on a beautiful cross (I think from Nate Gilkerson) that he headed strongly into the upper 90.
Both teams looked strong, with the varsity side showing some good potential as well.
Some of the oldies but goodies were: Michael Steiner, Mark Spitaleri, Todd Rufener, Steve Widmer and Bill Cristio. A great group of alum.
Another highlight was between the games when Coach Bud presented the “retiring ceremony” of the number 19. It is symbolic of ALL the players who have exemplified the Rittman Soccer Profile – “Great people, strong academics, and some athletic ability.” Receiving the honorary jerseys on behalf of all the others were: Brad Gasser and Abe Rufener (unable to attend). Coach Bud says, “I am proud of all the players we have seen through the years. So many are great citizens, and very productive contributors to society.”
We also held a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis of which the soccer community, and family members, were able to raise a helpful amount. Thanks to all who participated.
Now the teams are ready for the August 1st start up if the season. It is going to be exciting!
