The Rittman High School Varsity Volleyball team opened up tournament play tonight with a thrilling victory over the Manchester Panthers 3-1 (27-25, 16-25, 25-22, 30-28). The entire game was full of nail biting back-and-forth volleys, ultimately with Rittman coming out on top. Manchester was the #4 seed and Rittman was the #5 seed, and both teams received a first round BYE into the sectional finals. With tonight’s second-round win, the Rittman volleyball team has now won 6 straight sectional titles! This is also the first time in over 7 years that Rittman has moved up into the Division III tournament, as opposed to the Division IV tournament that the Indians have played in the recent past.

The Indians were led in serving by senior Bri Busic with 10 points and 2 aces, junior Miranda Brainard with 8 points and 4 aces, sophomore Makayla Yarman with 7 points and 1 ace, sophomore Mackenzie Fox with 5 points and 2 aces, senior Maddie Like with 5 points, and junior Sarah Hovest with 2 points. Leading the Indians with an explosive night was Busic, as she hammered out a career best 21 kills. Also smacking down winners were Hovest with 13 kills, Like with 9 kills, Brainard with 5 kills, and Hunter with 3 kills. Senior setter Hunter spearheaded the offense with a career high 41 assists. Also adding helpers were Yarman with 3 assists, Brainard with 1 assist, and Like with 1 assist. Leading in digs was also Hunter, as she had another career best 22 digs on the evening. Also adding digs were Brainard with 16 digs, Like with 14 digs, Busic with 8 digs, Hovest with 8 digs, and Fox with 4 digs. Hovest played big at the net, as she recorded 3 solo blocks. Helping Hovest out defensively at the net was Brainard with 2 block assists. The tribe was led on serve receive by Hovest with 20 serve receptions, Like with 17 serve receptions, Brainard with 15 serve receptions, Fox with 6 serve receptions, Busic with 5 serve receptions, and sophomore Emily Carpenter with 1 serve reception.

With tonight’s sectional finals victory, Rittman now has a 10-13 overall record (5-9 WCAL). The Indians will play next on Wednesday October 23rd against the Waynedale Golden Bears. The game will be at Smithville High School at 6:00pm. Rittman has been making some noise in postseason play, as this will be the 6th straight year that the Indians Volleyball team will advance to the District Semi-Finals.
